Abstract
Caffeine is extracted from coffee beans by treatment with a solvent having a boiling-point lying within the range 36-45 DEG C. Suitable solvents are extrone (methylene chloride), isopropyl chloride, methyl iodide, ethyl bromide, amylene, n-pentane, and n-propyl chloride. The beans before extraction are treated with steam or water so as to contain 18-30 per cent of water. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) covers also the use of solvents boiling below 36 DEG C. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
