Abstract

Partially-dried bituminous peat is extracted with a mixture of organic solvents, including solvents which are soluble and insoluble in waters, and are capable of forming azeotropes either mutually or individually with water, the solvents being used in such proportions to each other and to the extracted-water that, on distillation of the extract, the azeotropes escape as vapour leaving one solvent only, preferably the water-soluble one, containing the extracted bitumen. The extracted bitumen may be subjected to further treatment in the form of the solution or dispersion so obtained. The peat-to-be-extracted preferably contains 5 to 35 per cent of moisture, and is in the form of grains of 1 to 3 mm. in size. Solvent mixtures referred to are alcohol-benzene, and alcohol-trichlorethylene. The peat may be extracted while it is still warm from the preliminary partial-dehydration step, and the mixture of solvents used may also be heated. The yield of bitumen is augmented by treating the peat, during or after grading, with a dilute solution of an acid, e.g. 1 to 5 per cent hydrochloric acid, followed by drying. The acid-treatment may also be carried out in connection with the extraction. Specification 469,352 is referred to.
