673,103. Treating dextran. AKTIEBOLAGET PHARMACIA. Aug. 31, 1949 [Oct. 15, 1948], No. 22630/49. Class 121 In a process for preparing dextran with a molecular size suitable for medical use, dextran or partially degraded dextran is treated with a mixture of water and such amounts of a miscible organic liquid precipitant as will separate the dextran into fractions in each of which the dextran molecules are more uniform in weight than in the starting material, the fractions then being isolated as by drying. The precipitant may be an alcohol, e.g. methanol, ethanol or propanol. Regulated amounts of the precipitant may be added to an aqueous solution of the starting material to precipitate the dextran in fractions which are then separated from the solution. Alternatively, the starting material may be solid, e.g. powdered, and may be treated with aqueous soultions of the precipitant of differing concentrations so that fractional solution of dextran is effected.
