Abstract

In the process of dry-cleaning clothes with an inflammable hydrocarbon solvent, the clothes are dried by removing the bulk of the solvent mechanically and then agitating the clothes in a current of air heated to a temperature not exceeding the flash point of the solvent. The clothes are then submitted to air heated to a higher temperature, and finally with cool air. Using a hydrocarbon, e.g. hydrogenated naphthalenes or petroleum distillates, of boiling range 350 to 420 DEG F., and of flash point of 140 DEG F., the first stage is effected at 135 DEG F. for 10 minutes and then at 250 DEG F. Hydrocarbons having flash points above or below work-room temperatures may be used. In the latter case the air is cooled below workroom temperature. Suitable apparatus for this process is described in Specification 483,469.
