Abstract

Surface cracking of crystals, due to cooling after removal from the tank in which they have been grown at a raised temperature, is prevented by immersing the crystals, as soon as they have been removed from the tank, in a liquid which is immiscible with the solvent of the growing solution, in which the crystals are insoluble, and which has a relatively low volatility and latent heat of evaporation at the ambient temperature, the temperature of the liquid being initially the same as that of the crystals and then being brought or allowed to alter gradually to the ambient temperature. The crystals are then removed from the liquid and dried. The apparatus described in Specification 707,977 may be used to carry out the operation, viz; a temperature controlled oven with a sliding door in its underside and having humidifying means inside. The oven is first positioned over the growing tank, the crystals are lifted up and the oven then positioned over a tank of the liquid into which the crystals are lowered. The operation is described with reference to ethylene diamine tartrate crystals using paraffin oil as the liquid. Specifications 707,976 and 707,978 also are referred to.
