Abstract
712,766. Processing microscopic specimens. BARNARD, H. F. Oct. 15, 1952 [Oct, 15, 1951], No, 23936/51. Class 97(1) [Also in Group XXIX] In an apparatus for processing tissue for microscopy, wherein the tissue is successively and automatically immersed in a series of processing liquids, means are provided for keeping the liquids hot, thus enabling the processing to be accomplished quickly. The time during which the tissues are immersed in the liquids and the movement from one liquid to the next may be controlled by a tipping bucket mechanism. As shown, the processing liquids are contained in six pots, 10, which are immersed in the water bath 12, kept hot by a thermostatically controlled electric heater 13. The bucket 19 is filled with water from the constant drip, 22 and when filled to a certain level, tips and empties its contents, returning to its original position under the action of the counter-weight 21. As the bucket tips, the shaft 20 makes one complete revolution and the hook 24 engages one of six pins 26, spaced on the spider wheel 25, thus raising the rod 14 and turning it through one sixth of a revolution at the same time. The tissues 17 are suspended from a wheel 15, secured to the rod 14, and thus the tipping of the bucket raises each tissue from a processing pot, moves it into position above the next pot and lowers it therein.
