Abstract

227,139. Podmore, W., and Podmore, A. J. July 12, 1923. Pottery.-For testing pottery and like articles, apparatus is provided whereby defects due to the different coefficients of expansion of a body and it glaze are shown, and also the resistance of such articles to chipping and breaking. The article, which is mounted at one end of an arm s pivoted on a rod d and carrying at its outer end a counterbalance weight w, is immersed alternately in a hot bath t and a cold bath p. For this purpose, two vessels a, a<2> fixed together at right-angles and pivoted on the rod d are arranged to be tilted automatically when a certain weight of water from a supply pipe b enters the horizontal vessel. Stops u, v regulate the swinging movement so that the article is conveved from one bath to the other for a definite number of times, the number of immersions in the hot bath t being counted by a mechanical counter 5. The vessels a, a<2> have outlets a<5>, a<6> from which water flows to a trough o and thence to the cold bath p. The test for chipping is shown in Fig. 6 and consists of a swinging pendulum 12 having a steel striking-block 14, the pendulum being pivoted to a stud 13 adjustably mounted on the frame. The upper end of the arm 12 engages the teeth of a curved graduated rack 15 hinged at 16. In operation, the pendulum is caused to take up a position on the graduated rack according to the blow required and the rack is lifted causing the pendulum to fall and to strike the edge of the plate &c. which is mounted in a carrier 11. The test for breaking is of a similar nature to that for chipping, the pendulum in this case being mounted so as to swing at right-angles to the frame and to strike the back of the article.
