Abstract

In a process for agglomerating alumina, a trihydrate of alumina, preferably bayerite, is dehydrated at temperatures between 160 DEG and 500 DEG C. so that the water is removed immediately it is driven from the alumina, e.g. by vacuum distillation or by heat and suspension in the hot gas. The product may then be ground to required size, is shaped by mixing with water, allowed to harden in amoist atmosphere between 20 DEG -150 DEG C. to allow partial rehydration of aluminium into bayerite and then subjected to further treatment at temperatures between 250-600 DEG C. to effect at least partial dehydration.
