Abstract

Asphaltites having a fusing point over 250 DEG F., specific gravity 1,05-1,12, fixed carbon 10-25 per cent, solubility in carbon bisulphide over 96 per cent, are rendered substantially soluble in gasoline and benzol by heating the asphaltite and keeping at a temperature just above its melting point, e.g. 325-400 DEG F. for about 1/2 hour. The melting point and volume of the asphaltite is not appreciably affected by this treatment, but the colloidal structure is almost completely destroyed. The treated asphaltite can be used to impregnate brake linings.
