Abstract

Organic esters of cellulose are stabilized by treatment at temperatures between 50 and 150 DEG C. with aliphatic and/or aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, ethers, or ketones, which are non-solvents for cellulose esters and which neither are nor become acid in the process, or the chlorinated derivatives of these compounds. The process may be carried out under normal or excess pressure. In examples, (1) secondary cellulose acetate is treated for 6 hours with ethyl alcohol at 70 DEG C., (2) primary fibrous cellulose acetate is heated to 120 DEG C. with benzene for 25 mins., and (3) primary fibrous cellulose acetate is heated with methyl alcohol to 110 DEG C. for 35 mins.
