Abstract

Cellulose is esterified in a bath wherein instead of the whole or a part of the diluent acid generally used, there is present a low-boiling solvent of the primary ester by cellulose to be produced. The use of a low-boiling solvent, for example, methylene chloride, allows of easy control of the reaction temperature since any undue heat which may be generated is taken up in vaporizing the solvent. The solvent is readily recovered by distillation when the ester has been precipitated; for example the cellulose ester solution may be introduced into a bath of water heated to above the boiling-point of the volatile solvent used. Examples are given of the production of cellulose acetate in the presence of methylene chloride, and in one case the amount of methylene chloride used is such as to prevent the temperature of the bath going above 50 DEG C.
