Abstract
Halogen derivatives of aliphatic hydrocarbons are fluorated by means of antimony compounds having the formula SbF3X2, where X is chlorine, bromine, or iodine, obtained by dissolving antimony trifluoride in a solvent such as antimony tri- or penta-chloride or antimony tribromide and reacting the solution with the requisite halogen. According to the solvent and halogen used, the compound SbF3X2 is obtained in admixture with SbCl5, SbCl3Br2, SbCl3I2, SbBr5, or SbBr3I2. The mixture may be used as fluorating agent, or the compound SbF3X2 be first isolated by distillation. Specification 389,619 is referred to.ALSO:Antimony compounds having the formula SbF3X2, where X is chlorine, bromine, or iodine, are formed by dissolving antimony trifluoride in a solvent and reacting the solution with the necessary halogen. For instance, antimony trichloride or pentachloride may be used as solvent the former at a temperature above 70 DEG C., or in the case of treatment with bromine or iodine antimony tribromide may be employed. According to the halogen and solvent used, the compound SbF3X2 is obtained in admixture with SbCl5, SbCl3Br2, SbCl3I2, SbBr5, or SbBr3I2, but it may be isolated by distillation. The pure compound or the mixture containing it may be used as a fluorating agent in the production of halo-fluoro derivatives of aliphatic hydrocarbons. Specification 389,619 is referred to.
