Abstract
Compounds of the type RCHXCXXCHO, where R is hydrogen or an alkyl group of 1-4 carbon atoms and X is either chlorine or bromine, are prepared by reacting with the halogen a compound of the formula RCHXCH2 CHO, in the presence of water, which is provided as such or by a compound which furnishes water during the reaction by neutralization, metathesis, condensation or decomposition. In the example, chlorine is passed through 3-chlorobutyraldehyde and water, the mixture being maintained at a temperature of 100 DEG C. When chlorination is complete, the product is distilled and then hydrated to give butyl chloral hydrate.
