Abstract
Carbon disulphide and hydrogen chloride are produced by reacting dry chlorinated hydrocarbons with sulphur at a temperature of from 600 DEG to 1200 DEG C., the molar ratios in the starting materials of chlorine to hydrogen and of carbon to sulphur being 1 : 1 and 1 : 2, respectively. The reaction products are separated, for example by absorption of the hydrogen chloride with water, the carbon disulphide remaining being condensed, collected and rectified; alternatively, the hydrogen chloride may be converted into chlorine. Use of dry starting materials with the above molar ratios prevents formation of hydrogen sulphide, chlorine or undesired chlorinated by-products; if the starting materials do not contain chlorine and hydrogen in equimolar proportions, hydrocarbons may be added when chlorine is in excess, and gaseous chlorine, sulphur chloride or higher chlorinated hydrocarbons may be added when hydrogen is in excess. The chlorinated hydrocarbons, which preferably contain not more than twelve carbon atoms, may be the undesired isomers of hexachlorocyclohexane obtained as by-products in the preparation of the gamma-isomer. At the beginning of the reaction, carbon black is formed as a coating on the walls of the apparatus.
