Abstract

Acetone is monohalogenated with chlorine or bromine in the vapour phase by a process which comprises (a) reacting acetone vapour and halogen vapour in a molar ratio in excess of 3:1, preferably from 4 to 7:1, (b) distilling the mixture to separate hydrogen halide gas and unreacted acetone from the monohaloacetone, (c) contacting the mixture of hydrogen halide gas and unreacted acetone vapour with sufficient H2O to remove essentially all hydrogen halide as aqueous hydrogen halide solution, under conditions such that the acetone remains in the vapour state, (d) drying the acetone to a level less than 2% by wt. of H2O and (e) recycling the acetone to the vapour phase mixture of acetone and halogen. The process may be effected by passage of the reactants from phase (a) into a fractionating column, from which the issuing acetone hydrogen halide are passed into a second column for stage (c) water scrubbing. It is preferred that the amount of water employed be at least the amount required to produce the aqueous hydrogen halide azeotrope. The examples give details of the chlorination of acetone.
