Abstract

1435069 Ethylene dichloride and/or vinyl chloride ALLIED CHEMICAL CORP 23 Oct 1974 [23 Oct 1973 (2)] 45871/74 Heading C2C Ethylene dichloride and/or vinyl chloride are prepared by (a) reacting a gaseous mixture comprising ethane, Cl 2 and O 2 in proportions such that the molar ratio Cl 2 : C 2 H 6 is 0À2-1À2 : 1 and of O 2 : C 2 H 6 is 0À005-0À5 : 1 in an autothermic cracking zone bar 0À1-10 seconds at 700-1000‹ C. under autothermic conditions such that the reaction product contains ethylene and HCl; (b) cooling the product to below 600‹ C.; (c) passing the cooled product, together with at least the stoichiometric amount of O 2 required to produce ClCH 2 CH 2 Cl, to an oxyhydrochlorination zone and reacting under such conditions that the ethylene, HCl and O 2 are converted to a product containing ClCH 2 CH 2 Cl and optionally; (d) passing at least some of the product of step (c) to a cracking zone and reacting under such conditions that ClCH 2 CH 2 Cl is converted to vinyl chloride. The reactants in the autothermic cracking zone are preferably maintained at 850-950‹ C. for 0À25 to 2À5 seconds. The molar ratio of Cl 2 : C 2 H 6 may be 0À4-0À6 : 1 when vinyl chloride is desired, 0À6-0À9 : 1 when ethylene dichloride and vinyl chloride are desired or 0À9-1À2 : 1 for ethylene dichloride. The HCl formed in stage (d) may be recycled to the oxyhydrochlorination stage (c) and HCl formed in the cracking of ethylene dichloride may also be recycled.
