Abstract

1479747 Alkyl- and cycloalkyl-ethanolamines BASF AG 14 Nov 1974 [15 Nov 1973] 49249/74 Heading C2C Mono- and di-(alkyl- and cycloalkyl-ethanolamines) are made by continuously reacting ethylene oxide and a primary or secondary aliphatic or cycloaliphatic amine in the absence of water and in a tubular reactor to which already reacted reaction mixture is supplied in an amount of 0À01 to 0À5 times the amount of fresh reaction mixture. In alternative embodiments (1) the amine and ethylene oxide are passed continuously through a tubular reactor and part of the reaction product withdrawn from the end of the reactor is recirculated, (2) the amine and ethylene oxide are first passed to a pre-reaction zone operating with backmixing and in which the conversion is 0À01 to 0À33 times in the equilibrium condition and the output of this zone is then passed into a tubular reactor. Preferably reaction is effected at a temperature of 60-200‹ C., a pressure of 5 to 100 bar and with a ratio of imine hydrogen to ethylene oxide of 4 : 1 to 1À1: 1.
