1277740 Preparation of methylene bridged polyarylamines IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 29 June 1970 [11 July 1969] 35042/69 Heading C2C In a multi-stage process for the preparation of methylene bridged polyarylamines by the condensation of primary arylamines and formaldehyde, in a first stage the initial mixing of primary arylamine and formaldehyde is carried out in the absence of a catalyst for the reaction by feeding these two reactants in predetermined proportions into a mixing vessel through which a stream of already mixed and partially but incompletely reacted formaldehyde and primary amine is being recycled from a first reaction vessel fed from the mixing vessel. An exit stream from the first reactor is fed to a second reactor, strong acid catalyst e.g. a weak acid, an acid salt, a neutral ammonium salt or or a strong acid in relatively small proportions is added to the exit stream and the mixture with added catalyst heated to complete the conversion to methylene bridged polyarylamines.
