Abstract

1,183,153. Polyaryl alkylene polyamines. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 20 Sept., 1968 [25 Sept., 1967]. No. 44794/68. Heading C2C. In the manufacture of polyaryl alkylene polyamines by condensing a primary aromatic amine in aqueous solution with an aldehyde containing up to 4 carbon atoms in the presence of an acid catalyst, the reagents are first mixed at - 20‹ to + 40‹ C. in a mixer producing turbulence with a Reynold's number between 10<SP>5</SP> and 10<SP>7</SP>, based on water at 20‹ C., for such a brief period that no reaction can be detected, whereafter the reaction is allowed to proceed in two stages, the first stage being effected at 30-80‹ C. and resulting in the formation of intermediate products containing a methylene or substituted methylene group linked to the nitrogen atom of the amine, and the second stage being effected under turbulence at 80-200‹ C. and resulting in the production of the desired products. Thereafter, the catalyst is neutralized and excess water and unreacted amine are separated. The preferred reagents are aniline, formaldehyde and hydrochloric acid, but others are specified also. The reaction may be effected in an oxygen-free atmosphere, and may be continuous. Examples are given in which aniline, formaldehyde and hydrochloric acid yield final products consisting mainly of diaminodiphenylmethane with minor amounts of triphenyldimethylene triamine, tetraphenyl trimethylene tetramine and pentaphenyl tetramethylene pentamine. Apparatus is described.
