Abstract

Vinylidene chloride is obtained by reacting trichlorethane with milk of lime in a closed reaction space at 115-125 DEG C. the product not being separated from the reaction mixture until after the reaction between the trichlorethane and the milk of lime is complete or substantially complete. The term "trichlorethane" includes both 1,1,2- and 1,1,1-trichlorethane. The reaction may be rendered continuous by causing the reaction mixture to flow through a series of consecutive chambers which, except for inlets and outlets for the reaction mixture, are closed, the mixture subsequently being passed to a separation zone. Trichlorethane containing tetrachlorethane as impurity may be used, tetrachlorethane being converted to trichlorethylene from which and other products the vinylidene chloride may be isolated as by e.g. fractional distillation. Specification 534,733 is referred to.
