Abstract
Organophosphines and possibly organic phosphorus halides are prepared by reacting an organic halide RX, where R is a substituted or unsubstituted aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aryl or aralkyl group and X is chlorine, bromine or iodine, with phosphorus trichloride, tribromide or triiodide and magnesium in an inert hydrocarbon solvent, with the proviso that the reaction is started by initiation. Reflux temperature is usually used, temperatures of about 35-175 DEG C. being mentioned. An inert atmosphere is preferred. Initiation is usually effected by activating the magnesium. Various methods involving one or more of alkyl halides, ethers and iodine are specified or magnesium "heels" from a previous run may be used. It is advantageous to include some RX in the activation mixture. The products may be worked up by mixing with water, the organophosphines remaining in the organic phase and the organic phosphorus halides passing into the aqueous phase.
