Abstract

1325127 Aryl - dihalo - propenes; triaryl - 3- arylpropanes BAYER AG 6 April 1972 [7 April 1971 5 Nov 1971] 15957/72 Heading C2C 3 - Aryl - 1,1 - dihalopropenes - (1) of general formula in which X is halogen; R<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen, chlorine, bromine or alkyl; R<SP>2</SP> is hydrogen, chlorine, bromine, alkyl, cycloalkyl, haloalkyl or optionally substituted aryl; R<SP>3</SP> is hydrogen, alkyl, cycloalkyl or optionally substituted aryl; n is 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5; and R<SP>4</SP> is hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine, bromine, alkyl, alkenyl or haloalkyl, the radicals R<SP>4</SP> being identical or different when n is 2-5, are prepared by heating a 1,1,1- trihalo-3-arylpropane of formula to a temperature between 30‹ and 250‹ C. in the presence of a catalytic amount of a Lewis acid and optionally in the presence of a diluent. The 1,1,1-trihalo-3-arylpropane may be prepared in situ by reacting a benzyl halide of formula with a 1,1-dihaloolefin of formula at 10-100‹ C. in a weakly polar solvent in the presence of a Lewis acid and distilling off the solvent.
