Abstract
Unsaturated chlorides of the formula CH2Cl. CR:CH2, where R is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group, are prepared by the hot chlorination of olefines of the general formula CH3.CR:CH2 by preheating the olefine to a temperature of 250-350 DEG C., mixing it at this temperature with chlorine, and after a period of at most 1 second cooling the products, then separating the said unsaturated chloride formed, and recycling to the initial olefine feed unreacted olefine and saturated chlorinated hydrocarbons formed as by-products and intimately mixing them therewith, the total molar ratio of olefine to chlorine in the reaction mixture being at least 2:1 and the temperature reached by the reactants being 500-550 DEG C. Preferred olefines are propylene and isobutylene. Hydrogen chloride and unreacted olefine may be separated from the other compounds leaving the reaction zone by fractional condensation and the olefine freed from hydrogen chloride before being recycled. In a modification of the process, a part of the unsaturated chloride produced is recycled with or without saturated hydrocarbon dichloride, and a dichlorinated olefine is produced as a by-product. Examples are given.
