Abstract

Methyl-aromatic compounds are chlorinated fully in the side-chains by conducting the chlorination, assisted by a raised temperature and by exposure to light, with a current of chlorine which at least during the later stages of the reaction is passed at such a speed that the resulting hydrogen chloride is quickly expelled by the excess chlorine, for example, at such a speed that not more than one-third of the chlorine introduced is consumed. A preferred temperature range is 100--150 DEG C. In examples, the following compounds are fully chlorinated in the methyl groups: m-xylene, 1-chloro-2.4-dimethylbenzene, 1.3-dichloro-4.6-dimethylbenzene, p-xylene, chloro-p-xylene, p-chlortoluene, toluene, o-chlortoluene, 2.4-dichlortoluene, mesitylene and chloro-mesitylene.
