Abstract

Hexachlorobenzene is prepared from benzene hexachloride by treating with chlorine in the presence of light or a chlorination catalyst at a temperature between 200 DEG and 350 DEG C., preferably between 220 DEG and 280 DEG C. The starting material is preferably benzene hexachloride from which the gamma isomer has been removed. The chlorination catalysts may, for example, be iron salts such as ferric chloride, or sulphur, antimony, arsenic, bismuth, tin, selenium or tellurium or their halides or oxyhalides. Examples are given. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 711,172.
