Abstract
The invention comprises fluorinated aromatic compounds of the general formula Z(CF2)m-C6F5 in which Z is H, F or Cl and m is an integer from 3 to 14. The compounds may be prepared by reacting sulphur tetrachloride with a phenone of formula Z(CF2)m-1-CO-C6F5. The phenone used as starting material may be prepared by the oxidation of the corresponding carbinol which in turn may be prepared by the action of a pentafluorophenyl Grignard reagent with an aldehyde of formula Z(CF2)m-1-CHO. Alternatively, the starting phenone may be prepared by the reaction of a pentafluorophenyl Grignard reagent and the corresponding acid chloride which may be made by reacting an acid of formula Z(CF2)m-1COOH and phosphorus pentachloride. Examples are given of the preparation of perfluorobutylbenzene.
