Abstract

Compounds of the general formula <FORM:1092141/C3/1> wherein M is H, Na, K or NH4 and n is an integer of 2-21, are employed as emulsifying agents for the emulsion polymerization of tetrafluoroethylene.ALSO:The invention comprises compounds of the general formula <FORM:1092141/C2/1> wherein n is an integer from 2 to 21. The compounds may be prepared by oxidizing one of the compounds of the formulae <FORM:1092141/C2/2> <FORM:1092141/C2/3> <FORM:1092141/C2/4> <FORM:1092141/C2/5> wherein Y is Br or I; X1 and X2 are selected from H, F, Cl, Br and H, being mutually exclusive in terms of F; X3 and X4 are selected from H, F, Cl, Br, I, -OH, -R, -OR, -OCOR, -ROH, -COOR and -COOH, R being C1- 3 alkyl; X5 and X6 are selected from H, Cl, Br and I, being mutually exclusive in terms of H; m is an integer of 1-10; and p is 2 or 3. The starting materials of Formula I above are prepared by the process <FORM:1092141/C2/6> addition reaction <FORM:1092141/C2/7> The starting materials of Formula II above are prepared by the addition reaction of a compound of the general formula <FORM:1092141/C2/8> and a compound of the formula CHX1 = CX3X4. The starting materials of Formula III above are prepared by the addition reaction of a compound of Formula V above and acetylene or by the dehydrohalogenation of a compound of Formula II above. The starting materials of Formula IV above are obtained by dehydrohalogenating a compound of the formula <FORM:1092141/C2/9> which is obtained as a by-product accompanying the production of compounds of Formula II above when the olefin employed is of the formula CH2 = CX5X6. The compounds of Formula V above are prepared by the reaction of a compound of the formula <FORM:1092141/C2/100> with tetrafluoroethylene suitably under irradiation with ionizing radiations.
