Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the general formulae <FORM:1021189/C2/1> and <FORM:1021189/C2/2> (wherein R and R1 represent CF3, C2-8 alkenyl, C1-8 alkylmercapto, or C6-12 aryloxy or arylmercapto groups, R2 and R3 each represent H or a C1- 8 alkyl group except that R3 cannot b H in Formula (II), and x and y are zero or integers from 1 to 4, but are not both zero when R2 is H, and wherein R may also be halogen when x is zero), and the preparation thereof by the following processes: (a) (when R3 = H) by reducing a keto acid of the general formula <FORM:1021189/C2/3> (b) (when R3 = alkyl) by reacting a compound (III) with an alkyl magnesium halide or an alkyl lithium compound to form a hydroxyacid of the general formula <FORM:1021189/C2/4> (R3 = alkyl), dehydrating this to form a compound (II), and, if desired, subjecting this to catalytic hydrogenation. The compounds (I) wherein R3 = H can also be made by reacting a benzyl cyanide of the general formula <FORM:1021189/C2/5> with a phenethyl bromide of the general formula <FORM:1021189/C2/6> and hydrolysing the resulting nitrile.
