Abstract

Organic fluorine compounds of the formula C6Fx(CN)y, in which x and y are positive integers totalling 6, are prepared by heating the corresponding chlorine compounds of the formula C6Clx(CN)y with anhydrous potassium flouride in the absence of a solvent. The reaction may be effected at 150-550 DEG C., preferably under pressure. Examples are given of the manufacture of tetrafluorophthalonitrile from tetrachlorophthalonitrile. Other specified products are tetrafluoroisophthalonitrile, tetrafluoroterephthalonitrile, pentafluorobenzonitrile and 1,4-difluorotetracyanobenzene. The products may be hydrolysed to the corresponding fluorinated acids.
