Abstract

A perhalocarbon selected from perhaloalkanes and perhalocycloalkanes in which one or two of the halogen atoms are chlorine, bromine or iodine and the remainer are fluorine, are further fluorinated by heating under anhydrous conditions with at least one mole of potassium, rubidium, or caesium fluoride in a liquid organic medium having a dielectric constant of at least 20 and containing no active hydrogen to replace at least one of the halogen atoms other than fluorine by fluorine. The perhalocarbon preferably contains at least two carbon atoms and the halogen atoms other than fluorine are on adjacent carbon atoms. The liquid organic medium may be a nitrile, nitro compound, organic sulphate or sulphone, or a di-N-substituted amide. Numerous examples are given.
