Abstract

In a process of chlorinating benzene or a chloro-substituted benzene to the dichloro or tetrachloro stage by treating the benzene or chloro-substituted benzene with chlorine in the presence of a metal chloride catalyst, a source of sulphur is added to the starting material, whereby an increase in the amount of the paradichloro isomer or of the 1,2,4,5-tetrachloro isomer, respectively, is obtained. The source of sulphur may be elemental sulphur, sulphur monochloride (S2Cl2), or sulphur dichloride (SCl2) and it is preferably used in an amount not more than 0.015 mole per cent S as S2Cl2 or equivalent when using sulphur free feed stock. The metal chloride may be ferric or aluminium. Many examples are given.
