Abstract
1,163,927. Chlorotoluene. TENNECO CHEMICALS Inc. 2 Sept., 1966 [3 Sept., 1965], No. 39435/66. Heading C2C. A chlorinated toluene mixture having an increased para-isomer content is prepared by reacting toluene with chlorine in the presence of a ring-chlorination catalyst and in the presence of sulphur or an inorganic sulphur compound selected from sulphur mono or dichloride, carbon disulphide, thionyl chloride and a metal sulphide having at least one divalent sulphur atom, the sulphur or sulphur compound being at least partially soluble in the reaction mixture; with the proviso that, when the metal of the metal sulphide having at least one divalent sulphur atom is capable of forming a chloride capable of acting as a ring-chlorination catalyst, the first-mentioned ring-chlorination catalyst need not be present, and with the proviso that when the ring-chlorination catalyst is an iron halide inorganic sulphur compound is not sulphur, sulphur monochloride or sulphur dichloride.
