Abstract

Iron is desulphurized by treatment with a mixture consisting of calcium carbide and/or oxide together with sodium chloride and sodium carbonate, the ratio by weight of sodium chloride: sodium carbonate lying within the range 1:3 to 3:1 and at least one third of the treatment mixture consisting of calcium compounds. Preferably sodium chloride and sodium carbonate should each form less than one quarter of the mixture, and not more than 20mg. of the latter is added per ton of melt.
