Abstract

1349195 Synthetic fly ash G & W H CORSON Inc 28 May 1971 18078/71 Heading C1H A synthetic sulphopozzolanically reactive bituminous coal fly ash contains 0À5% to 30% by weight of calcium or magnesium oxide and 5% to 50% by weight of sulphate ions combined with some of the calcium or magnesium oxide, expressed as SO 3 , the ratio of uncombined calcium or magnesium oxide to combined calcium or magnesium oxide being in the range of 0À2 : 1 to 3 : 1. The fly ash is made by injecting quicklime or hydrated lime into a coal furnace whereby sulphur oxide gases from the coal react with the lime to form calcium or magnesium sulphoaluminate such as the triple salt 3CaO. Al 2 O 3 .3CaSO 4 .30-32 H 2 O. When the fly ash reacts with water one or both of the products 3MO.Al 2 O 3 .3MSO 4 .30-32 H 2 O or 3MO.Al 2 O 3 . MSO 4 .12-13 H 2 O are formed, where M is calcium or magnesium. A load supporting composition may be formed comprising 8 to 90% by weight of the fly ash and from 5 to 87% by weight of aggregate.
