Abstract

Vinylidene chloride is obtained by treating vinylchloride dissolved in 1 : 1 : 2-trichlorethane with excess chlorine in the presence of a chlorination catalyst and treating the resulting 1 : 1 : 2-trichlorethane with aqueous alkali at a sufficient temperature to drive off vinylidene chloride. A detailed example is given in which ferric chloride is used as chlorination catalyst. Iron turnings and aluminium, stannic and antimony chlorides are also mentioned. The process may be continuous.
