Abstract

1368781 Chlorination of hydrocarbons STAMICARBON NV 5 Nov 1971 [14 Nov 1970] 51626/71 Heading C2C Chlorinated hydrocarbons such as CCl 4 , C 2 Cl 4 , C 2 Cl 6 and C 4 Cl 6 are prepared by reacting in a first stage one or more unsaturated C 4 or higher aliphatic hydrocarbons with chlorine and/or hydrochloric acid, and oxygen, in the presence of an oxychlorination catalyst at a temperature sufficiently low whereby substantially no oxidation of the hydrocarbon is effected, e.g. 250‹ to 400‹ C., and a partially chlorinated intermediate is formed, and further chlorinating the intermediate in a second stage with chlorine and/or hydrochloric acid. The second stage may be carried out with or without the presence of oxygen, an oxychlorination catalyst or a chlorination catalyst.
