3-Picoline is purified from 4-picoline and/or 2,6-lutidine by heating with an oxide, oxyhalide or halide (chloride, bromide, or iodide) of sulphur or phosphorus, whereby the impurities are converted to complex non-volatile products and the 3-picoline may be separated as by distillation. Examples are given of the use of chlorosulphonic acid, phosphorus oxytrichloride, sulphur monochloride and sulphur dioxide. Other reagents which may be used are phosphorus trichloride, pentachloride, tribromide, triiodide, and pentoxide, sulphur trioxide, sulphuryl chloride and thionyl chloride.
