Abstract

Terephthalic acid is manufactured by a process which comprises oxidizing p-tertiary butyl toluene with nitric acid having an initial strength between 5 per cent and 50 per cent by weight at a pressure of from 100 to 600 p.s.i. and a temperature of from 150 DEG C. to 250 DEG C. In an example terephthalic and p-tertiary butyl benzoic acids are obtained by oxidizing p-tertiary butyl toluene with 30 per cent nitric acid. p-Tertiary butyl benzoic acid may be converted to terephthalic acid by further oxidation. p-Tertiary butyl toluene is obtained by reacting toluene and tertiary butyl chloride in presence of ferric chloride.
