Abstract
The invention comprises 2,7-dimethyl-octadiene-(2,6)-ine-(4)-dial-(1,8), O=CH.C(CH3)= CH-CC-CH=C(CH3).CH=O. This may be produced by oxidizing 2,7-dimethyl-octadiene - (2,6) - ine - (4) - diol - (1,8) with manganese dioxide in the presence of acetone. The reaction temperature is preferably 20 DEG C. but may vary between 0 DEG C. and the boiling point of the solvent. The diol is prepared by anionotropic rearrangement in aqueous acetone by means of sulphuric acid of 2,7-dimethyloctadiene - (1,7) - ine - (4) - diol - (3,6), which is obtained by reacting a -methyl acrolein with acetylene di-(magnesium bromide). The novel dialdehyde is an intermediate in the preparation of b -carotene, bixin and crocetin. A detailed example of its preparation is given.
