Abstract

A 1-monocarboxylic acid ester of 2-methyl-3 - phytyl - 1,4 - naphthohydroquinone is obtained by reacting a 1-monocarboxylic acid ester of 2 - methyl - 1,4 - naphthohydroquinone with phytol in the presence of boron trifluoride. The reaction may be effected in an inert solvent which boils at a higher temperature than that of the reaction medium, e.g. tetrahydrofuran, dioxan, ethylene glycol dimethyl ether. The boron trifluoride may be employed in gaseous form or in a complex, e.g. a boron trifluoride etherate. As starting materials there may be employed 2 - methyl - 1,4 - naphthoquinone - 1-acetate and the corresponding 1-propionate, 1-valerate, 1-butyrate, 1-caproate, 1-caprylate, 1-phenylacetate and 1-benzoate. Examples disclose the production of 2-methyl-2-phytyl - 1,4 - naphthoquinone - 1 - acetate and the corresponding 1-propionate, 1-butyrate and 1-benzoate. The products can be hydrolysed to 2 - methyl - 3 - phytyl - 1,4 - naphthohydroquinone and the latter oxidized to Vitamin K1. Specification 768,650 is referred to.
