Abstract

Sulphites of trialkyl citrates are obtained by reacting a trialkyl citrate with thionyl chloride. An organic base such as pyridine may be present to bind the hydrogen chloride liberated, a solvent such as ether may be used, the temperature may not exceed room temperature, and two molecules of ester may be employed per mol. of thionyl chloride. An example is given using triethyl-, trimethyl- or tributyl-citrate.
