Abstract

The invention comprises 2,6-dicyanopiperidine. It may be prepared by reacting glutaraldehyde dicyanhydrin with ammonia. The reaction is generally carried out at a temperature in the range 0 DEG -100 DEG C. Anhydrous or aqueous ammonia may be used or the ammonia may be used as a solution in an inert solvent such as methanol, ethanol, isopropyl alcohol, ether, dioxan, tetrahydrofuran, glycol, pyridine or triethylamine. The glutaraldehyde dicyanhydrin used as starting material may be prepared by reacting glutaraldehyde with a base, preferably at 0 DEG -40 DEG C. Specification 915,228 is referred to.
