Abstract

b -Ionylidene acetaldehyde is obtained by the oxidation of b -ionylidene-ethanol with manganese dioxide in an organic solvent, preferably chlorinated; the reaction takes place at room temperature or above. Quantities of manganese dioxide of 1/2 to twice the weight of the b -ionylidene ethanol may be used and synthetic MnO2 obtained for example by the action of potassium permanganate on manganous sulphate is preferred. An example is given.
