Abstract
Laevo - rotatory lactone of 6a - bromo - 8b - hydroxy - 2a - methoxy - 3b ,5b - epoxy - 7 - oxo - 4aa , - 8aa - decahydronaphthalene - 1b - carb - oxylic acid or its optical antipode or racemate is prepared according to the equation <FORM:0888415/IV (b)/1> <FORM:0888415/IV (b)/2> by oxidising the corresponding 7b -hydroxy compound with a solution of chromic acid and phosphoric acid in aqueous acetic acid, working at ambient temperature and in the presence of a solvent which is immiscible with water, e.g. dichloroethane, tetrachloroethane, or methylene chloride, and subsequently separating the desired product, e.g. by extraction with methylene chloride.
