Abstract
DL-a -bromo-b -hydroxybutyric acid is prepared by bringing together in an aqueous medium crotonic acid and N-bromosuccinimide, whereby at least one (preferably substantially one) molecular proportion of hypobromous acid is generated in situ per molecular proportion of crotonic acid, and adds at the double bond thereof; and isolating the product. Preferably the reaction is effected at room temperature; the reaction medium may be water, a homogeneous mixture of water with an organic solvent such as acetone, or a two-phase mixture of water with an organic solvent such as ether. The product may be extracted by saturating the reaction mixture with sodium chloride and extracting with a water-immiscible organic solvent such as ether.
