Abstract
3 - (a - phenyl - b - acetyl - ethyl) - 4 - hydroxycoumarin is prepared by condensation of benzaldehyde with acetone in aqueous medium in the presence of a basic condensation catalyst, removal of excess acetone from the reaction product and then condensation of the residue (which contains benzylidene acetone) with 4-hydroxycoumarin in the presence of quinoline sulphate as catalyst. A detailed example is given.
