Abstract
540,004. Dicarboxylic acids. SHELL DEVELOPMENT CO. Feb. 27, 1941, No. 2671. Convention date, Feb. 29, 1940. [Class 2 (iii)] Aliphatic dicarboxylic acids having the same number of carbon atoms as the starting material are produced by oxidizing cycloaliphatic hydrocarbons or cyclic ketones with nitric acid of 4-24 per cent. strength the concentration of the acid being maintained within this range by adding stronger acid during the process, which is effected at 50-130‹C. A large number of alicyclic hydrocarbons and cyclic ketones are mentioned. An oxidation catalyst is not necessary, but may be employed. The process may be continuous, and may be effected at atmospheric or raised pressure, for instance up to 10 atmospheres. The dicarboxylic acid may be separated from the reaction mixture by concentration and cooling for crystallization. Examples describe the oxidation of cyclopentene and cyclopentanone with the production of glutaric acid.
