Abstract
Aliphatic carboxylic acid anhydrides are produced by oxidation of the corresponding aldehydes by gases containing free oxygen in the presence of a metal salt of an aliphatic acid having 2-20 carbon atoms as a catalyst, the catalyst being formed in situ from a salt derived from an aliphatic acid having 1-4 carbon atoms and a hitherto used metal catalyst. Suitable acids having 12-20 carbon atoms are, for example, stearic acid, oleic acid, naphthenic acid and acid mixtures formed by the oxidation of paraffin; and these may be added separately or in admixture with each other to the reaction mixture containing the usual catalyst salts. The aliphatic aldehydes corresponding to the aliphatic acids having 12 to 20 carbon atoms can also be added to the reaction mixture containing the usual catalyst salts, where they are oxidized to the corresponding acids. Preferably at least 1 per cent of the catalyst salts of the acids having 12 to 20 carbon atoms are used and the reaction may be carried out continuously. A solvent may be added to the reaction mixture, especially such solvents as dissolve the anhydride formed and not the water, e.g. ethyl acetate and ketone compounds such as cyclohexanone and diethyl ketone. In the example acetaldehyde is oxidized by oxygen and cobalt acetate; copper acetate and oleic acid are added to form the catalyst. Specifications 443,151 and 446,259 are referred to.
