Abstract
Epoxides are produced by a process comprising treating an ethylenically unsaturated compound containing at least 3 carbon atoms per molecule with a monoperacylate of an aliphatic aldehyde containing 2-6 carbon atoms per molecule in the liquid phase at a temperature in the range 25-200 DEG C. in the presence, as catalyst, of a base, an acidic salt or an acid stronger than acetic acid. If desired, the catalyst may be dissolved in acetic acid. Suitable ethylenically unsaturated compounds may be, for example, olefins, and unsaturated aldehydes, acids, esters, alcohols, ethers and halogenated hydrocarbons. The aldehyde monoperacylate may be formed by oxidizing the aldehyde, e.g. with oxygen at a temperature below 15 DEG C. or in the presence of a catalyst such as a salt of cobalt, copper, or iron or of ozone or ultra-violet light.
