Abstract

533,066. Dicarboxylic acids. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP DE BATAAFSCHE PETROLEUM MAATSCHAPPIJ. Oct. 5, 1939, No. 27246. Convention date, Oct. 8, 1938. [Class 2 (iii)] Aliphatic di-carboxylic acids are produced by the oxidation of cyclic alcohols with nitric acid of 4-24 per cent. strength at above 50‹C., and if desired in the presence of an oxidation catalyst such as vanadic. The process is effected continuously, nitric acid of higher strength being supplied and reaction liquor withdrawn continuously so as to keep the concentration of nitric acid in the reaction mixture within the limits stated. The acid and alcohol are supplied from vessels 1, 2 to a reaction chamber 3 having a stirrer 4, heating-coil 5 and reflux condenser 19. Nitric acid is distilled from the withdrawn liquor in a column 6 and the di-carboxylic acids are separated by crystallization. The invention is described with reference to the oxidation of cyclopentanol to glutaric acid, but the following alcohols are also mentioned as suitable initial materials, viz. cyclobutanol, 2-methylcyclobutanol, 3-methylcyclopentanol, gem. dimethyl cyclopentanol-3, cyclohexanol, gem.' dimethyl and gem, dibutyl cyclohexanols, 3-nitrocyclohexanol, #.<SP>3</SP>-cyclohexenol, and cycloheptanol.
